Hammerhead sharks are native to Hawaiian waters and play an important role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. This artwork is intentionally created without its dorsal fin to represent the millions of sharks lost each year to shark finning—a practice where sharks are often stripped of their fins and discarded at sea. By using recovered microplastics from Kahuku Beach, this piece reminds us that protecting the ocean means protecting all who call it home.
